Some of the most significant events in recent decades would never have happened had it not been for one, seemingly innocuous invention: Air conditioning.

The amount of energy consumed by running residential air conditioners in Canada almost tripled between 1990 and 2007—52 per cent of Canadians have central air conditioning, and that figure rises to 80 per cent in Ontario, according to Natural Resources Canada.
